A New Perspective

I’m happy to welcome Soul Mate author Rachel Sharpe. Today, Rachel shares her writing journey and latest release, Simple Misconception.

Here’s Rachel!

Although I have been writing off and on my entire life, it wasn’t until the summer after I graduated college that I made my first real attempt at novel writing. Unfortunately, it fell short, literally, reaching only 45,000 words and thus being labelled novella instead of novel.

A good old-fashioned “who dun it,” this story was about a police detective in small town Louisiana trying to solve a murder case that occurred during a summertime seafood festival. Despite its length, I felt it was a good attempt, first or otherwise. Still, I knew it wasn’t my best work. I knew I could do better. It was just a matter of perspective.

You see, that novella was written in third person. I, the author, served as an objective observer, watching the story unfold along with the reader albeit from a distance. While that is often how many great novels are written, I felt detached from both my characters and the story.

When I decided to try again, I knew this time, I wanted to use first person. I wanted the reader to be inside the main character’s head, experiencing the story as it unfolded with her. That was when Jordan James was born.

As is the case with many characters, there are similarities between Jordan and myself; however, as her story has progressed, so has she. She has a depth I couldn’t achieve as a third party observer. For Jordan to live, she had to tell her story. And she had to tell it her way.

“A Trip to the Big Easy Turns into a Big Nightmare…”

When private investigator Jordan James returns home to New Orleans for Christmas, she never imagined her holiday could end with kidnapping and death. As she begins to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a childhood friend, she unwittingly stumbles upon a dangerous, international syndicate. With lives at risk and time running short, Jordan must find a connection between these seemingly unrelated events if she ever hopes to find her friend.

Location, Location, Location…

I’m happy to welcome Soul Mate author Rachel Sharpe. Today, Rachel shares the rationale behind the location of Bitter Retribution, Book 2 in the Jordan James, PI Series.

Here’s Rachel!

To me, there is something magical about snow. Maybe it’s because of its connection to Christmastime. Maybe it’s because it signifies purity. Or maybe it’s because when you’re from New Orleans, it’s a rare sight.

Whatever the case, I have always loved snow. When I decided that Bitter Retribution, book three of the Jordan James, PI series, would involve Hollywood actors and a sensational murder suited for the big screen, I had a choice – I could set the story on a sound stage in Burbank, or I could move it elsewhere, on location.

When I made the decision the setting would be on location, I couldn’t imagine a better place to have it than the Colorado Rockies in the snow. The idea of a senseless murder happening in such a beautiful place gives an added layer to the tale, a visual as memorable as any in a crime show drama.

And while I still love snow, Jordan’s latest case reminds us of one thing – much can be hidden beneath the pure, white snow…

“What started out as a star-studded vacation has turned into a sensational avalanche…”

When private investigator Jordan James decided to join her best friend on the set of her hit television series in the Rocky Mountains, she had no idea she would become a key player in a murder mystery more suited for the big screen than the slopes. With one actor dead and a killer on the loose, can Jordan uncover the culprit before another victim makes headlines on Hollywood Minute?

Excerpt

“Don’t let your tears flow,” she insisted passionately from the screen. I glanced up and saw Roch and Nikole embracing while the KGB closed in on them. Slowly, a crescendo of brass arose as Roch and Nikole fought gallantly to their deaths. The credits began and I glanced at the clock. It was ten.

“What garbage,” I laughed aloud, grinning at the thought of meeting Roch Turner the next afternoon. I turned off the television and stretched. Yawning, I walked into my bedroom. After doing one more double-check, I was satisfied I had not forgotten anything. I got ready for bed before climbing beneath my heavy, down comforter and closing my eyes. Sighing contentedly, I thought with excitement about seeing Heather for the first time in six months, skiing in the Rockies, and watching a hit sitcom being filmed. This is going to be the best Thanksgiving ever, I thought happily. pushing images of Rick from my mind.

As I succumbed to the tranquility of slumber, eagerly awaiting a much-needed vacation, I had no idea of the depth and complexity of the situation in which I would soon be enmeshed. I had no idea of the sheer magnitude of the vendetta in which I would find myself, a senseless dispute which began years before my own birth. If I had, I would have ripped my flight itinerary up into a million tiny pieces and stayed in the warm haven of my bed.

Spotlight on Rachel Sharpe

I am happy to spotlight Soul Mate author Rachel Sharpe and Lost Distinction, the second book in the Jordan James, PI Series.

Here’s Rachel!

rachel sharpeIt’s safe to say I’ve always wanted to be a writer. While that was not my first career of choice (not that you asked, but according to my grandmother it was lion taming astronaut), it has always been one I’ve returned to. Ever since I could write, I would write down my stories. As the daughter of two English majors, it came as a surprise to no one that I decided to major in English. My initial goal was, however, to continue in law.

A post-graduation job at a local courthouse made me realize quickly that that was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. With school finished and no idea what I wanted to be whenever I finally grew up, I decided to use my free time wisely and return to my roots: writing. My first true foray was a forty-five thousand word novella about a police detective solving a murder at a Louisiana seafood festival. It was fun to write, but I knew I could do better.

The best advice any author has ever given me was to write what you know. After my novella, I thought about what type of novel I would want to write, something I could maybe even turn into a series. It didn’t take long for Jordan James to emerge. “Cold Ambition,” the first novel in the Jordan James, PI series, took about four months to write. I also lucked out with editing thanks to the help of my super supportive parents. Now, all I needed was a publisher.

This, it turned out, was harder than it looked. It took two years for me to find my publisher and that was after two other possibilities fell through. At the time, each one felt like a devastating blow. Looking back, I can see it all happened for a reason. I couldn’t imagine working with a more amazing publisher or having the constant support of the other authors who have signed with them. My writing journey has been filled with as many twists and turns as a good mystery novel and I know it’s far from over. I look forward to not only watching Jordan’s story develop, but my own as well.

We stood there in silence, considering the significance of this discovery. Although there was still no proof, this threat suggested there could have been more to Arthur’s disappearance than we realized. If Arthur was kidnapped, we might not be looking for a missing person. We might be looking for a murderer or his victim.

I suddenly felt a new anxiety about this case. The more I considered all the unknowns, the more I realized there was only one person who could provide some much-needed answers, Ambassador Gatlin Cross.
