Remembering Dr. Wayne Dyer

Brilliant. Inspiring. Visionary. Teacher. Speaker. Author.

These are only a handful of descriptors that can be used to describe this pioneer in the personal-development field.

Today would have been Dr. Wayne Dyer’s 76th birthday. I’m honoring his birthday by recalling 10 quotes that have motivated and inspired me for over three decades.

waynedyer1

“Circumstances do not make a man, they reveal him.”

“If you believe it will work out, you’ll see opportunities. If you believe it won’t you will see obstacles.”

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.”

“Go for it now. The future is promised to no one.”

“When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.”

“Conflict cannot survive without your participation.”

“Stop acting as if life is a rehearsal. Live this day as if it were your last. The past is over and gone. The future is not guaranteed.”

“How people treat you is their karma. How you react is yours.”

“When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.”

“It’s never crowded along the extra mile.”

Do you have a favorite quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer?

Happy National Teacher Appreciation Day

In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim National Teachers’ Day. The day was celebrated on March 7th until 1985, when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The first Tuesday of the that week was then designated as National Teacher Appreciation Day, a day to thank all the special teachers in our lives.

Here are ten of my favorite quotes about teachers…

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.
Henry Adams

Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well. Aristotle

Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth. Helen Caldicott

If you have to put someone on a pedestal, put teachers. They are society’s heroes.
Guy Kawasaki

Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges. Joyce Meyer

Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students. Solomon Ortiz

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called ‘truth’.
Dan Rather

Most of us end up with no more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives. Andy Rooney

They inspire you, they entertain you, and you end up learning a ton even when you don’t know it. Nicholas Sparks

Teaching is a calling too. And I’ve always thought that teachers in their way are holy – angels leading their flocks out of the darkness. Jeannette Walls

Top 10 Things a Cowboy Should Have

I’m thrilled to welcome author Erin Bevan to the Power of 10 series. Today, Erin chats about ten cowboy essentials and her new release, Wedding Day.

Here’s Erin!

erinbevanIn honor of my new release today, Wedding Day, I decided to list the top ten things (in my opinion) a cowboy should have. (I mean, besides a sexy body!) Here we go!

1. Hat- he isn’t a true cowboy if he doesn’t wear a hat, right? Right!

2. Jeans-Tight ones!

3. Boots- Preferably with a little mud on them. We need to know he isn’t just playing the part.

4. Belt- He’s got to have something to hold those pants up, right?

5. Pearl snap shirt-or flannel-or some kind of shirt with buttons. Or, maybe, shirtless would be even better!

6. Spurs

7. Chaps

8. Horse-These last three go together, don’t you think?

9. Lasso- I’ll be honest; being able to lasso something is hard work. I’ll give the cowboy some slack if he can’t lasso, but at least know how to tie one.

10. Great manners. No sense in having a big strapping cowboy if his behavior stinks.

Some things I didn’t list that could definitely help would be a good smile, which includes a nice set of teeth, great abs, strong legs, and the list could go on forever.

What do you think a cowboy should have?

Famous Bull Rider Dallas Day met Cassie Bailey briefly in high school, but her plain looks and quiet personality left no lasting impression on him. Cassie, however, couldn’t say the same about Dallas.

Their paths cross again ten years later when Dallas is home recovering from an injury, and Cassie is the only veterinarian who volunteers her services at the home-town rodeo. She’s jump-starting her new practice, and every eligible man within a ten-mile radius is trying to land a date with the attractive vet.

Dallas’ older brother bets him that, even with all his charm and fame, Dallas can’t land a date with the reserved lady vet. Not one to turn down a challenge, Dallas makes it his mission to win a date with Cassie. After seeing her, he realizes they’ve met before, but he doesn’t remember her being so pretty. His persistence pays off, but when Cassie finds out about the bet, their new love is put to the test.

Excerpt

“Is there anything I can help you with?” A deep voice asked from behind her.

“No, I think we have it.” She hopped down from the pen. Glacier blue eyes locked with hers. She would know his eyes anywhere. Her heart quickened just as it did the first time she’d ever laid her gaze upon him, and a tingling sensation shot through her.

Dallas looked older than she remembered, broader, gruffer, but still sexy.

Tucker, you have Tucker.

Where was he, anyway? In her haste to get ready, she’d forgotten to call him.

“Dallas? Yeah, we can use a hand.” Chevy still fumbled with the lock. “Can you come over here and help me with Knuckle Head? Dr. Bailey wants him to walk around so she can get a closer look.”

“I really don’t think that’s necessary–”

“I would love to help. That’s why I’m here.” Dallas jogged to the front of the bull and grabbed the lead rope with his left hand. A plastered cast circled his right wrist and rose halfway up his forearm.

She turned to Spencer and furrowed her brow.

Spencer stared back at her and displayed her pageant winning 2005 Miss Frisbee smile, her thumb up in the air. Some friend she was.

Dallas and Chevy led the bull out of the pen while she observed the bull’s gait.

“Let’s get him over by a water hose. I want to get a closer look at his foot.” She pointed toward a washing station and followed behind the men as they led the bull, sure to steer clear of Knuckle Head’s hind legs in the event he wanted to kick her.

From her position, she had a clear view of Dallas’s backside. Everything appeared to be as tight as she remembered, which did nothing to settle those distracting tingling sensations.

Bio

Erin Bevan was born and raised in Southwest Arkansas. She spent her teenage years working for her aunt at the local gas station flipping burgers and making milkshakes, dreaming of the day when something better would come her way, and it did in the form of a five foot six, one hundred and fifty pound engineer.

Fast forward ten years later, she found herself stuck inside an apartment in South Korea while her daughter went to preschool and her husband went to work. Alone and unable to speak the local language she turned to books for a friend. After reading a few hundred in such a short time, she decided to try her hand at writing one.

That first one sucked, but by the fifth and sixth book, Erin started to get the hang of this writing thing. Getting the first contract in the mail was a dream come true. Now, with three babies at home, she squeezes in stories one word at a time, one sentence at a time, one day at a time.

She’s a full time mom, a full time wife, with a little writer sprinkled in whenever she can get the chance. And the laundry? Well, it’s best not to open the washroom door!

Combat Your Writer’s Block – 10 Tips

I’m thrilled to welcome Soul Mate author Kim Hotzon to the Power of 10 series. Today, Kim shares her best tips for combating writer’s block and her latest novel, Hands Full of Ashes.

Here’s Kim!

writersblockhotzonAll writers, from time to time, experience the dreaded block. I’m not referring to the chopping block (though it may as well be) but rather ‘writer’s block’. This is a condition otherwise known as a withering, about-to-be dried up landscape once it descends upon a writer’s corpus callosum, kind of like a dust cloud. Writer’s block is a loathsome annoyance, and there are plenty of images of the greats (think Hemingway) who’ve demonstrated various coping skills by swigging unlimited bottles of wine or whiskey to dredge up something from the recesses of their dusty skulls.

If you find yourself suffering from this malady, don’t stomp on your keyboard just yet. I’ve devised a list that may assist you (and myself for that matter) in keeping that pesky condition at bay.

Switch your routine

People who write tend to be creatures of habit. A certain time of day may normally fuel your productivity but let’s face it, we all need a change once in a while. Leave your table, couch or desk behind. Find a nice park bench or cubicle at the library. Do you find that sentences and paragraphs come flying at you just as your head hits the pillow? Maybe your most creative sparks fly at night when you’ve been writing during the day. Switch your schedule as much as possible and net those wandering thoughts when they appear.

Engage with people

Books come alive with characters. If you’re having difficulty with dialogue, or with the advancement of your characters’ relationships, spend time interacting with people. Writing can be a solitary pursuit but sometimes you’ll need to do a bit of research before your writing can continue. Because characters are often inspired by someone you know, engage him/her in conversation and learn more about his/her personality traits. Details go a long way in making characters three-dimensional and believable to your story.

Imbibe in one of your vices (within reason)

wineroseMaybe you’re developing a hum-drum mood, or stuck in stagnation. Loosen up. It’s okay to have a glass of wine (just not a keg, mind you) to ease your mental straitjacket. Go buy a decadent dessert. Do something to reward yourself. You should avoid criticizing yourself and your work. All work and no play is never a good idea. Just don’t get lost in your playground every day.

Read in the genre you’re writing in

If you’re plowing through a science fiction novel while trying to write historical romance, your linguistic word building may lead you in the wrong direction. Read what you’re currently writing to get a sense of vocabulary and setting details. If you find you keep reading certain genres and the one you’re writing never evolves, you might want to re-consider switching to a new genre. Your story, if you’re passionate about it, will not leave your head. If it does, you may not love it as much as you want to.

Recall your past angst

Delivering powerful, emotional scenes requires the ability to convey emotions into words. That’s where your own recollections of exciting or traumatic events will help. Tap into a time that made you feel fear, anger or joy. What caused those feelings? Who was involved? Taking a trip down memory lane may ignite a chain reaction of memories that could serve you well in constructing that next chapter.

memorylane

Plot your story

Okay, you’ve got a rough storyline idea with characters meshed out. You’re 20,000 words into your manuscript and then . . . the cobwebs resume clogging your skull. This can be frustrating and cause you to toss your work into the trash pile or at the back of a drawer. This stage of writer’s block can be overwhelming. Take a step back and plot your storyline out on a piece of paper. You had a great idea to start with and your idea is still a good thing. Sometimes a visual marker or graph can help you strategize and construct further plot points. Think of this approach as being similar to following a recipe. Once you see how far you’ve moved along in your manuscript you may feel your motivation resume. Or, as an old familiar saying instructs us, “it’s easier to see where you’re going if you’re eyes are open”.

Keep notes handy

A while ago I finished a time travel manuscript. Moving between time periods and getting different historical facts correct was dizzying. I found keeping a notebook handy for all my spontaneous reminders and fact building came in handy. Sometimes I need a reminder when to include a landmark detail or when my character is going to say something specific to move the story along. With so much information swirling in an author’s mind small details can quickly be forgotten. Write stuff down as you think of it.

Apply humour

bellylaughHumor is one of the best strategies for coping with anything in life. Writing requires so much internal, right-brain thinking it can become exhausting. Humor, either for yourself, or introduced in your writing, can unleash a floodgate of ideas and a new perspective. A good belly laugh is always appreciated – by the writer and the reader.

Visit local writing groups/classes

Beyond engaging with a neighbor, store clerk or random person, spending time with people who ‘do exactly what you do’ is a proven winner. Who else knows better the issues you’re dealing with? Need motivation, inspiration or advice? Your fellow writers will provide a support system with tangible and constructive feedback. Can’t get to a local writer’s group? Join one online, there are several. Google your options and reach out to other writers.

Think of writing as a job and not a hobby

All people with jobs have tasks to perform and most have deadlines to meet. Writing is no different. Begin with a schedule and set a goal. Even if you only manage to carve out 250 words a day, you’ll have a thousand words completed in a few days. Keep an eye on your word count, but don’t become a slave to it. The purpose in moving forward and being productive is to form a writing habit that works for you. Don’t compare yourself to other writers who seem prolific with their daily word count. Seeing something on paper, or computer screen is far better than staring at a blank page. You may consider joining NaNoWriMo or engaging peer support. Instituting challenges will help you achieve your writing goals.

Writing is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. It is also one of the most difficult. Without a doubt, writing a novel requires talent, effort, and perseverance. The most successful writers are the ones who don’t give up. So assemble a notebook, your laptop, pick a time of day, a location, and begin plotting out your next chapter.

10 Best Moments in My First 50 Years

I’m thrilled to welcome author Carly Jordynn to the Power of 10 series. Today, Carly shares ten of her best moments and her upcoming release, Shifter.

Here’s Carly!

I’ve chosen to list my ten best moments during my first 50 years of life.

bestmoments2

10. Buying my first house was a wonderful experience, nerve-wracking, but great. I will never forget the pride of first time home ownership, decorating, and making it your own. I was a nervous wreck when I applied for the loan, but it all went through without a hitch.

9. My wedding day. Even though the marriage ended in divorce, I will never forget that day, my dress, the guests, and how I felt becoming a Mrs.

8. My Baptism. I was in elementary school when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I followed up with Baptism in the fourth grade. It was a special time. Many of my school teachers attended my Church so they were able to celebrate with me.

7. My senior year in high school was fabulous. There were so many activities, dates, and milestones. I was nominated for Basketball Homecoming Queen, Prom was an interesting evening shared with my date and our friends, I attended my first concert my senior year, Graduation was exciting, but sad in a way . . . everyone going their own way.

6. Graduating from college. It took me a long time to find a major and stick to it. I had a lot of false starts along the way, but finally made it through. I dated a lot during college so this probably didn’t help my GPA or making up my mind as to what I wanted to be when I grew up. I made so many good friends at the Baptist Student Union. Those friendships are still strong today.

5. My home life. I’m an only child and have two really wonderful parents who have loved and supported me over the years. Yes, I was spoiled, but not overly so. I am blessed to have these two for my folks.

4. First kisses. I love the newness of a relationship and those first kisses shared. It’s an exciting time. I still get butterflies when I think of some of the first kisses I have received.

3. Saying goodbye to a special friend. He passed away, but I will always treasure our time together. It makes me smile to think of him. I know that sounds weird, but towards the end we had some really fabulous conversations. There was no need to pretend to be cool, or anything like that. We were bare bones honest with each other. Those talks mean the absolute world to me and I am grateful for that time.

2. Becoming a published author. I couldn’t string a sentence together in high school nor in college. Realizing my dream of becoming an author after that was just amazing. I love every minute of my writing life. I have met some wonderful authors along the way who have been supportive and helpful. I have met industry professionals who have offered wonderful advice. I get giddy when somebody asks me to sign a book for them, asks for an interview, or asks me to talk to them about writing.

1. Becoming a mother when I adopted my daughter from Guatemala. What an adventure that has been. So many things did not turn out right and had the potential for disaster. Every setback resolved itself. God gave me my daughter . . . somebody else just had to give birth for me.

Excerpt

Alarm bells went off in my head. “1848? Where have you been?” I then slapped my hand over my mouth as realization came over me. Rhydian laughed, shaking me up and down where I sat on his stomach.

“It’s all becoming clear isn’t it, Slayer?”

I put my hand on his chest. “You know Hutch, don’t you?”

He laughed again.
“Yes, I knew Andrew when he first came to Villa Mirage.”

“Did you know Joseph and Molly?” I asked. Joseph and Molly were my great-great-grandparents. Joseph had been Hutch’s best friend and Molly had been the Slayer. She was killed two weeks shy of her seventeenth birthday.

He sat up so I was now on his lap. We were nose to nose again. My lips parted of their own accord. His head came closer to mine and then he laughed. “I won’t be your rebound Vamp, Sasha.”

I felt heat rise into my cheeks. What was I doing? I loved Hutch.

Rhydian’s words were like a splash of cold water to my senses. Anger coursed over me. I stood and yanked him up with me. I reached for my stake in my boot and came up empty handed.

Rhydian held my stake up and grinned. “I’m disappointed. I thought the Slayer would have known I was stealing her weapons.”

I grabbed for the stake. He held it over his head, just out of my reach. I jumped for it and grabbed the stake triumphantly. That is when he grabbed me. He drew me close against his body. My heart thumped into overdrive. He grabbed the back of my head and crushed his lips into mine. It wasn’t a gentle kiss. This was a full out assault. He pulled me tighter against him, almost like pulling me into himself. My hands wrapped around his neck of their own accord. My stake dropped harmlessly to the ground. When he finally lowered me, I was unsteady, my lips throbbing. I looked into his eyes, almost afraid of what I would see there. His eyes were troubled, like he didn’t expect to feel anything from what we just did. What started out as a joke on his part to make me angry had backfired.

I bent to retrieve my stake and came up empty handed again. I knew I had dropped it somewhere. I felt Rhydian stiffen next to me. I turned slowly, knowing who I would see.

“Looking for this?” Hutch held my stake out to me.

I stared at him wordlessly. No noise would come out. What had I done?

Hutch glanced at Rhydian. “What are you doing back in Villa Mirage?”

Rhydian slipped his arm around me. I flinched from his touch. “Oh come on, Sasha. Don’t be that way. You know you liked that kiss.”

Anger, shame, horror, and dread washed over me. “Did you know? Did you know Hutch was out there?”

He laughed. “Of course, and if you had been paying attention, you would have known too.”

I turned to Hutch.

“I’m sorry.”

“Save it, Sasha,” he barked. “I have eyes. I don’t need a play-by-play of the details.”

Here’s Erin!

erinbevanValentine’s Day is over and done with now, and I’m sure your local florist is reaping the benefits of the lovely holiday. Were their red roses sitting on your counter top from the holiday? Or what about pink or white? Have you ever stopped to think about what the color of the roses represent?

Well, think no more. I am going to tell you. Here are ten lovely rose colors and their meanings.

Red– Romance. (I’m sure we all knew that one!)

White– Purity, Innocence, Secrecy. (I feel a story coming on with white roses! Some deep dark secrets involved. Taps tips of fingers together and laughs-Mwa Ha Ha Ha!)

Dark Pink– Appreciation or Gratitude.

Light Pink– Admiration or Sympathy.

Yellow– Joy, Delight, Friendship. (Maybe this is why everyone considers yellow a “happy” color?)

Orange– Fascination or Desire.

Peach– Appreciation or Sincerity.

Coral– Desire (Mmm… I think I gave my kid’s teacher coral roses once. Oops!)

Lavender– Love at First Sight or Enchantment.

Yellow with Red Tips– Falling in Love (Aww!!)

Which color would you prefer to get? I think dark pink would be nice. Everyone likes to feel appreciated every once in a while, right? Next year, when you send out your flowers, use this little cheat sheet as a guide. Don’t be like me and send roses of desire to your kids’ teachers! Unless, you do desire them, then I say go for it!

When Erika’s ex becomes her boss less than a year after dumping her by text, she gets desperate to find a date to the corporate Valentine’s dance so he doesn’t suspect she still has feelings for him. Though not a fan of texting for the obvious reason, she doesn’t have much choice but to tap the keypad in order to gain the attention of the only viable candidate from the classified ads.

Grayson made the mistake of listening to his brother a year ago and has regretted what he did to Erika ever since. But his brother’s next suggestion just might be his salvation when he takes out an ad for a Valentine’s date…and Erika answers.

Using a pseudo name and keeping contact to text messages only, Grayson’s plans to make Erika fall back in love with him appears to be working…until the date of the dance draws near, and she pushes a meeting—face to face.

Excerpt

Valentine’s Day.

She sank deeper into the couch. What was she going to do? She couldn’t show up alone to the company dance. Not with the chance of Grayson being there. No way.

“Maybe go to another speed dating session?” She grabbed a tissue off the coffee table and wiped the excess slime from her fingers.

“My hairdresser’s single. You want me to ask him?”

“Your hairdresser’s gay. I don’t think he’d be interested in me.”

“Really?” Megan gave her a funny stare.

“Really.” Erika snorted. “Have you not seen the picture of him and his ex-partner at his station?”

“That was his partner?” Her friend’s mouth gapped open. “I thought it was his brother.”

She shook her head. Her friend was one of the smartest people she knew, but common sense eluded the girl.

Megan popped more hearts in her mouth. “That explains so much now,” she mumbled around the candy. “No wonder my hair always looks good.”

“Yes, it does.” Erika sipped her wine.

Her friend swallowed. “Well, I’m sorry, honey. I don’t know any single guys. If I did, I’d try to date them myself.”

“That’s okay.” She sighed and slumped back onto the sofa.

“Is Grayson single?”

“I don’t know. Why are you asking?” She narrowed her gaze. “You want to date him?”

“No.” Her friend said “no” as if it was the most obvious answer in the world.

“I’m thinking about you. You wouldn’t go back out with Grayson again, would you? Please say no.” Megan’s shoulders sagged.

Go back out with Grayson. She never thought she’d be given another chance. Would she go back out with him after the way he treated her? Of course not. She deserved better, despite how wonderful he had been.

“I don’t think so. He really hurt me. I can’t give him that privilege again.”

“Good for you.” Her roommate perked up and patted her on the back. “Stay strong. You’ll find someone.”

“You’re right. I’m going to have a date for that corporate Valentine’s dance, even if I have to search the classifieds.”

“Surely, it won’t come to that.” Megan held up her glass for a toast.

Erika clinked hers with her friend’s. “Yeah, surely.”

Her roommate sat her glass down on the table and reached for more hearts.

“Here, give me one of those.”

“I love reading the little sayings.” Megan passed her a heart and tossed her dark hair behind her shoulder. “What’s yours say?”

She flipped over the candy to see the phrase. Bright pink letters stared back at her. Oh, you can’t be serious. “‘Text me’. Seriously?”

Megan burst out laughing.

“You would find that funny.” Erika popped the heart in her mouth and obliterated the little saying she had grown to hate so much.

10 Interesting “Behind the Scenes” Features – Desire in the Arctic

I’m thrilled to welcome author Stacy Hoff to the Power of 10 series. Today, Stacy shares ten “behind the scenes” features of her upcoming release – Desire in the Arctic.

Here’s Stacy!

1. DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC takes place in Gates of the Arctic National Park, which is America’s most remote and least visited US Park. It is also the only US Park located in the Arctic Circle. Visitors can only access the park by plane, unless they want to hike five miles from the nearest highway and then cross a raging river. (A plan not recommended by the US Parks Department, by the way.)

GatesofArctic (2)

This is a photo of Gates of the Arctic National Park. The Brooks Mountain Range is in the distance. Tundra is in the foreground. The stormy weather shown here is accurate—a snowstorm can happen at any time, even in June. (This picture, courtesy of the US Government, is public domain.)

2. Once park visitors arrive, they will find no facilities of any kind and no ranger station. It is advised that only “expert” campers attempt to stay. All campers however, regardless of ability, are asked to check in at the park ranger station in Fairbanks with their camping dates, and further advised to also give their “vacation” information to loved ones. This way, a search and rescue mission can be launched if a camper fails to return. (Which is highly possible.)

The hero in my story, William “Redd” Redding, is a former Special Ops Marine who is an expert camper. He is familiar with all kinds of survival situations, and has spent time in Alaska.

3. My heroine Ana Davis, on the other hand, is a New York City native. The only hiking she’s done is in Central Park.

I grew up in New York City, too, so I can relate to Ana. The below picture is one I took of Central Park, which is not too far from the television station where Ana works. I wrote Ana’s point-of-view as if it were my own. I kept thinking, “what would I experience upon seeing Gates of the Arctic?”

4. I researched all the wildlife in the Arctic Circle for story authenticity. To do this, I traveled back to my old home in New York City to the American Museum of Natural History. Here I visited the exhibition hall of North American Mammals. Below is my picture of the museum’s wolverine exhibit.

Wolverine (2)

This furry guy pops up in my story. But don’t view wolverines as a cuddly pet. They are a lot deadlier than the look! Think of them as a cross between a giant weasel and a bear. (Would the famous X-Man be named after a wuss?)

5. I am a reality TV junky, so my DESIRE series is based on a survival/reality TV show where the characters have to survive the most brutal of wilderness situations for twelve days in order to win a million dollar prize. (I’m sick that way.)

I have been watching these survival/reality shows for a few years, especially ones that take place in Alaska. Here are some of my favorites: Railroad Alaska, Life Below Zero, The last Alaskans, and Buying Alaska. (Yeah, I know the last one is about home buying, but when I say I’m hooked on Alaska shows, I mean it.)

6. DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC is the sequel to DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES. I have traveled to the Everglades, but not the Arctic Circle. Going back New York City was as far as I was willing to go towards researching this new book. Hey, what can I tell you? Unlike Wolverine, I am a wuss.

At least I survived seeing alligators in the Everglades during an airboat tour. (I also saw them in Disney World. You can see them, too, here in my photo.)

7. For DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC’s cover, I worked with the artist to get an accurate depiction of Gates of the Arctic in June, which is when my story takes place. The original cover was much colder looking, with lots of ice and snow. But there is some greenery in June, although that does not mean a sudden snowstorm can’t kick up.

Here is the final version of the cover.

8. I had no idea was I going to write this sequel when I penned DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES. When I finally decided the story needed to be continued, I picked a survival climate that was the exact opposite of Florida’s heat and humidity. Cold weather kept things interesting for me, and hopefully for the reader, too.

9. “El Nino” has brought a relatively warm winter to those of us living in New England. That’s good, because I hate shoveling. But it does kind of kill the Arctic mood. Luckily, when I started writing DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC last winter, there was plenty of snow on the ground to keep me inspired.

The wolverine tracks pictured below are ones I wouldn’t want to see when my back yard gets snowy. Luckily for me, these paw prints were spotted in Gates of the Arctic.

Oh, but wait a minute! That’s not lucky for my characters. Hope they stay strong! (Photo courtesy of the US Government, and is public domain.)

10. Although I write all kinds of romance, from contemporary to dark “new adult,” I must admit that action/adventure stories are some of my very favorites to write.

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Be Dancing

I’m thrilled to welcome author Mariposa Cruz to the Power of 10 series. Today, Mariposa shares ten excellent reasons why you should be dancing and her latest release, Package Deal.

Here’s Mariposa!

mariposa cruz1. There’s nothing like hearing your favorite song while on the dance floor. Best of all when you hear that song again whether you’re doing dishes or stuck in traffic, you’ll be instantly transported back to the dance floor.

2. With such a broad range of genres, there is dance for everyone. If you like a Latin beat but feel intimidated by Salsa’s spicy rhythm, try Bachata. The basic step for Bachata is easily learned in one lesson making it a favorite for club lessons. If you can do a box step, you can do Bachata.

3. The history of many dances involve a cultural blend of a variety of music genres and myth. Bachata was once danced in the peasant neighborhoods and brothels of the Dominican Republic. Cumbia was originally a courtship dance brought by slaves to the coastal towns of Columbia. While I don’t know where the true history ends and myth begins– dancing unites people across culture and time.

4. It’s fun twirling in circles while your skirt whirls around, acceptable on the dance floor—less so in other public places if you are over the age of six.

5. You have the chance to get your bling on. Whether you’re in tight blue jeans or a slinky black dress nothing dresses up an outfit like sparkly hoop earrings or rhinestone dangles.

6. For writers the dance floor is a great source for stories. My experiences in clubs and dance class were the inspiration behind my Rhythm and Romance series. Reno has a vibrant Salsa scene and I knew it had to be the backdrop for “Package Deal”.

7. Your gym does not serve margaritas or mojitos. Where else can you get a cardio work out and finish with a refreshing cocktail?

8. If you’re single, dancing is a great way to determine the measure of a man. Is his lead rigid and controlling? Does he fix you with an icy stare with every missed step? If you notice any red flags on the dance floor it may be time to waltz in the opposite direction.

9. Whether you’re on the dance floor or watching from the sidelines the show is fascinating and always changing. Where else can you see a fashion show, high drama and amazing dancing all played out in on a single stage?

10. You meet people of all ages from all walks of life on the dance floor from college students to retirees.
