Give Yourself More Grace

On Wednesdays, I share posts, fables, songs, poems, quotations, TEDx Talks, cartoons, and books that have inspired and motivated me on my writing journey. I hope these posts will give writers, artists, and other creatives a mid-week boost.

A long-time fan of bestselling authors and coaches Marc and Angel Chernoff, I look forward to reading their emails and blog posts. Here’s an excerpt from a recent post:

It’s incredibly easy to overestimate the significance of a single decision, outcome, or event in the heat of the moment. But you must remind yourself to take a deep breath when things don’t go your way. Your results in the long run — good or bad — are always the byproduct of many small steps, outcomes, and events that transpire over time.

The truth is we all fail sometimes. The greater truth is that no single failure ever defines us. Learn from your mistakes, grow wiser, and press on. Character and wisdom are sculpted gradually. They come with loss, lessons, and triumphs. They come after doubts, second guesses, and uncertainty. The seeds of your success are planted in your past troubles and failures. Your best stories will come from overcoming your greatest challenges. Your praises will be birthed from your pains. So, keep standing, keep learning, and keep living.

  1. Hi Joanne,I hope you’re doing well. I enjoy reading your blog whenever I get a spare moment!I just wanted to check to see if you’ve been notified about being in a class action suit involving the pirating of our books. Only one of my books was pirated, ‘Souls Estranged’. Luckily I registered it back in 2014 and it is copyrighted. I remember Debby telling me that it wasn’t necessary to copyright it. So glad I did! After my initial six year contract with SMP, I had the rights reverted back to me as the sole owner. I intend to do an overhaul on all three Souls books and publish them independently. Life is too busy for me right now as I am teaching mornings at preschool and watching my granddaughters in the afternoons. I miss my writing days but I’d never give up this precious time watching my grandkids grow. I was notified through snail mail last week about the class action suit and I just submitted a claim. I checked the database and your book, ‘ Between Land and Sea’ is on the list. If you have any new releases I still squeeze reading time in and would love to read your work. Just let me know your current titles. Have a wonderful holiday and keep warm!Yours,Rebecca Aka Anne B Cole

    • Hi Becky, Good to hear from you. Thanks for letting me know about the class action suit. Sounds like you’re super busy. And a grandmother…a very young grandmother. Your granddaughters are very fortunate to have you in their lives. I re-released my three SMP books last fall. A bit grueling, but I learned how to self-publish using Atticus. In October of this year, I released a novelette, Hippie Mermaid, Book 3 in the mermaid series. Wishing you and your family all the best during the season. Joanne

  2. Hi Joanne, I look forward to reading your posts!  Hope you are plugging away on your next book! I’m taking a break from writing for now. I’ve re-edited my Suspense/Thriller series The Protector (The Drive/The Code/The Key) and hope to do a complete overhaul on the Souls Series and republish them independently. For now, I am watching my granddaughter (15 months) full time in the summer and in the afternoons after I teach preschool during the school year. LIttle Corinne and her future sibling (due in October) will keep me busy! Thanks for the incredibly true reminder of how we grow after failure. I have a book that I jot notes and words of wisdom into for my grandkids to read someday and the excerpt in your post today is perfect! Thanks for the blog nuggets every week! Enjoy the summer! • Hi Becky, Good to hear from you! I’ve thought you of often and recall with fondness those “early” days in our writing careers. I am also taking a break from novel writing. My focus right now is on short pieces for anthologies and blogs.

Hugs to Little Corinne. She sounds adorable.

      Joanne
