A Different Kind of Mermaid

10396963_sWhenever I describe the protagonist of my novel as an overweight, middle-aged ex-mermaid, eyebrows shoot up in surprise. The men often laugh and joke about Isabella’s extra years and pounds. One argumentative lawyer was very blunt in his criticism: “I don’t understand why your mermaid has to be old and fat. Why couldn’t you let her be young and beautiful?”
